POSTSCRIPT: “IF YOU FALL INTO A DICTATORSHIP…..”
After my last substack a close French friend texted me, asking that I keep marching to resist the Trump regime. He wrote: “Si vous tomber dans la dictature, une grande parties du monde va aussi tomber dans le totalitarisme.”
“If you (the United States) fall into a dictatorship, a large part of the world will also fall into totalitarianism.”
He was telling me what should have been obvious. That for better or worse we Americans have a responsibility to resist and protect democracy in the rest of the world as well as our own country. America’s pre-eminence works both ways. Our boasts of exceptionalism, our status as a superpower, includes the power to influence politics around the globe.
So as we resist we’re not only protesting the attack on our rights at home, we’re supporting Europeans pushing back against Trump’s threats to take over Greenland. We’re supporting people in dictatorships who lost their only source of trusted news when Trump removed the Voice of America. We’re supporting Ukrainians who fear Trump’s betrayal in favor of Russia. We’re supporting countries that lost vital health care when he eviscerated USAID.
More reasons to march…….
This is what Trump and his enablers want. That is why they support the far right parties in Europe as well as cozy up to dictator-type leaders around the world. So odd but real.
